Rude by Magic

I've been wanting to talk about this song for a while, and I'm so glad I can. Now, I'm sure you've heard of this song, but if you need a refresher or to match the song title to the song, I'll give you a moment to go look it up on youtube.

Yep...I'll just wait here.

You got it?

Know which song I'm talking about?

I absolutely despise this song. As soon as the reggae beat starts blaring through the speakers at my work, I inwardly cringe. Most of my coworkers have heard me rant a time or two about this song, so they know exactly how I feel about it. (Though I guess now it's my song whenever it comes on the radio.)Then the crooning voice of the lead singer pulses on.

The song starts out nice. There is a gentleman who wants to ask his girlfriend's father for her hand in marriage, because her father is an "old-fashioned man". So far, so good. However, it goes downhill from there.

The gentleman is rejected. The father says no! The horror! But what does the gentleman do?

He says that the father is rude and that he's going to marry his daughter anyways.

...what?

That's just the biggest middle finger to someone who you were just moments ago asking for permission to marry his child. He said no for a reason. This is his daughter, his little girl (yes, women, you will always be daddy's little girl no matter how old you are). What if he was just concerned about your future? What if he wanted to get to know you, the gentleman caller, more? What if he said no as a joke? Well, we won't ever know since you just decided to insult him and carry away his flesh and blood.

And the song gets worse!

The gentleman caller threatens to take her away, start a family with her, and let her father have nothing to do with it. Supposedly she loves him enough to let this happen. Well, to all you ladies out there, do you really want to burn the bridges between your family for a guy?

Honestly, when I heard this song, I was appalled. Is this the message we want to be spreading to our future generations? That it's okay to insult your girlfriend's father and then proceed to say that you're going to marry her anyways? Well, good sir, I'm afraid that you're rude and most definitely not human if you'll let your primal instincts get the better of you.

What he should have done was ask her father why, try to understand where he was coming from...have a civilized conversation. This situation could have ended through better means for everyone. There is always a reason behind a "no" answer.

Chicken

Yes, this sounds like a really weird post, but I promise, it will make sense. Now, after working 8+ hours on my feet all day and then working out for 30 minutes, I am exhausted and really not wanting to think about dinner. Just ready to plop on the couch and watch some Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune.

Now, there is one thing that I absolutely love getting that is amazing for dinner, inexpensive, and can be used for future meals. That is a rotisserie chicken from Costco.

Yummy!
Yes, it looks like that. And it is super delicious. It is the perfect dinner for Hubby and I. I normally eat it plain, but he loves to dip it in BBQ sauce. However, what I love about this chicken is the price. $4.99. Yes, that's it. You pay a little over $5.00 to get a 3lb already cooked chicken. This makes dinner for us at least two nights, if not three, since I will debone the chicken after we're done eating and use it in casseroles or other dishes.

So, if you are looking for something quick and easy, grab your Costco card (or your parent's or really good friend) and head there for a great meal! Also, have you tried their chicken enchiladas? Totally worth it!

Hummingbirds

I actually wanted to write about a different topic today, but this one kept insisting.

I found out yesterday from my mother that my childhood church recently was involved with some troubling events. Someone, who I don't know personally or know their actual name anyways, embezzled our church. This person took a significant amount of money for such a small community church we have. It's terribly unfortunate, because this person has also been having medical troubles and we are theorizing that they paid off medical bills with this money. It's just a sad situation all around, because we believe that this person was planning to pay the money back once they got it before it was figured out that money had been taken. Anyways, I digress.

My pastor was preaching a sermon on Sunday about how we need to forgive others and to not hold on to the pain and anger associated with this whole thing. As she closed, a hummingbird, which somehow flew into the church previously, promptly passed away and fell from the rafters in front of the communion table.

This seems like a very significant sign. I know that hummingbirds are significant in some cultures, so I was curious as to what their importance was. What I found did surprise me.

Hummingbirds are known for infinite energy, as everyone can see since they never seem to stop beating those wings. They are known for looking at the small things in life for happiness. They are known for being resilient, to travel great distances with perseverance. They also teach us to look to the past, but not dwell on it, but to zip on to the future. Hummingbirds are also very smart and can remember which flowers they have visited and how long it will take before that flower will replenish. Females are larger than male hummingbirds, and their heart beats at 1,260 beats per minute. Crazy!

I love this quote that describes hummingbirds and what they stand for: "Hummingbird is the creature that opens the heart. When the hurt that caused us to close our hearts gets a chance to heal, our hearts are free to open again." Reference

How amazing is that? A simple, sweet little bird can mean so much? Before this, I had no idea that hummingbirds also stand for resurrection. How beautiful is it that something so small, so precious, can inspire so much.

These are some of the websites I visited to find this information: Hummingbird Symbology, Hummingbird Symbolism, Hummingbird Spirit Animal, Hummingbirds: Basic Facts, Hummingbird facts

Depression

I think the reason why everyone has been hit so hard with Robin Williams’ passing is that it was completely unexpected. He was such an iconic actor for many different generations but was always known for his comedy. Depression is something that can hide even in the happiest of people. It can affect anyone no matter what race, age, gender, etc. And depression is so good at hiding in the people you are closest to and sometimes you never find out until later.

It's unfortunate that depression is a mental health issue that is recently coming into light. Modern science is starting to understand it more and more as we advance in medicine. Depression is not something that I have struggled with but some people very close to me struggle with it on a daily basis. You wouldn't even know that they had it. It's so scary when they get into a place that you can't help. My advice: be there for them. You don't need to even talk to them all the time. Just be a friend. Just be a presence. Sometimes that's all it takes. Oh, and pets are an amazing way to help with anxiety/depression.

I urge anyone who thinks they might have depression or any other mental health issues to please talk to someone. It’s so heartbreaking to lose someone to suicide; it doesn’t matter if they are as famous as Robin Williams or if they only have a few close friends. Every life lost is someone’s light being put out. Please, talk, share.

"But oh, to be free. Not to have to go ‘Poof! What do you need? Poof! What do you need? Poof! What do you need?’. To be my own master. Such a thing would be greater than all the magic and all the treasures in all the world." ~Genie

Review time: App inspiration

So, I know many people really do not like to run. I get that. I do not really like to run either. However, I finally hit my first milestone. I ran 2.35 miles in 30 minutes. Straight. Yes, this is a huge deal to me.

I don't know the last time I've ever run that far or for that long...like ever. It's taken me about 8 weeks to get to this point, but I am so proud of myself for how much I have accomplished and how I was able to push through mental limitations to get to this point. I have been using the encouragement of coworkers and an app to help get to this point.

Yes, this app. You can get it for free on the iTunes store here.

I have a love/hate relationship with this app. I love it cause I'm running. I hate it cause I'm running. However, I have finally crossed my first stepping stone, which was to make it to the 5k mark. And I did. I promise I am not a person that is really into fitness either. I am on my feet all day at work, but that's the most amount of exercise I got before this program.

So, it starts out at a good pace. The first couple of weeks are the hardest, not for the running part, but for the mentality to keep going. I had to set a workout regime for myself and keep at it. I run every Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday and those days work for me. I also run on a treadmill. I like being able to control my pace and to stay at that pace for the allotted amount of time. I know other people prefer to run outside. That's fine. It is totally up to you and what you feel comfortable with. I am also afraid that if I run outside that I will end up lost in some neighborhood far away from where I want to be. (Note: I get lost easily and yes, I have gotten lost with a GPS. I'm just lucky, I guess.)

It really does prepare you for the 5k really well. I haven't gotten to the 10k part yet, but I'm actually going to start the program over again to increase my pace. I'm currently running from 4.6-4.8 mph. I'd like to go a little faster, but for my first time doing this program, I'm happy with my progression.

Anyways, I really do recommend this program if you decide to take up running and are not in the best shape or just want to start out easy. It gives you a push every week that helps increase your drive. It might kick your butt for the first couple of days, but it's worth it.

Under-appreciating under-appreciation

We've all had it happen to us. That feeling of being put down by another person, whether it's with a coworker, sales person, Internet trolls, or even your own friends or family. That overwhelming under-appreciation of you. That sudden anger that springs upon you when you have been underestimated in any particular manner of life. It happens to everyone when really, it shouldn't.

Underestimation leads to bitterness and contempt. However, I absolutely love it when people underestimate me with something that I carry full confidence. The look on their face when I have bested them. A secret joy in my life. But that's not the point.

Underestimating people can lead to hurt feelings. Just because a coworker does not have a college education does not mean you should negate anything they say. Many early Americans couldn't afford to leave the farm in order to attend school. However, they were still intelligent. Think about that the next time you try to belittle someone.

You never know when they might become an expert witness in a murder trial. (If you don't understand this reference, go watch "My Cousin Vinny")
