I
think the reason why everyone has been hit so hard with Robin Williams’
passing is that it was completely unexpected. He was such an iconic
actor for many different generations but was always known for his
comedy. Depression is something that can hide even in the happiest of
people. It can affect anyone no matter what race, age, gender, etc. And
depression is so good at hiding in the people you are closest to and
sometimes you never find out until later.
It's unfortunate that depression is a mental health issue that is recently coming into light. Modern science is starting to understand it more and more as we advance in medicine. Depression is not something that I have struggled with but some people very close to me struggle with it on a daily basis. You wouldn't even know that they had it. It's so scary when they get into a place that you can't help. My advice: be there for them. You don't need to even talk to them all the time. Just be a friend. Just be a presence. Sometimes that's all it takes. Oh, and pets are an amazing way to help with anxiety/depression.
I urge anyone who thinks they might have depression or any other mental health issues to please talk to someone. It’s so heartbreaking to lose someone to suicide; it doesn’t matter if they are as famous as Robin Williams or if they only have a few close friends. Every life lost is someone’s light being put out. Please, talk, share.
"But oh, to be free. Not to have to go ‘Poof! What do you need? Poof! What do you need? Poof! What do you need?’. To be my own master. Such a thing would be greater than all the magic and all the treasures in all the world." ~Genie
